News September 2014

Giancarlo is currently working on his first production as répétiteur with the Opéra immédiat company (Johann Strauss - La Chauve-Souris (Die Fledermaus))

His next commission is for the saxophone quartet Ensemble Saxologie. Premiere scheduled for 2015.

News March 2014

Giancarlo has completed Ricercare, his composition for solo percussion. Premiere details to be revealed soon.

He is currently working on an analysis of three of his works that will form the content of his Master's memoir. It will eventually be made available here on the site.

News January 2014

Giancarlo has completed his orchestral composition, Epitafe, and the first of three movements was read and recorded by the Orchestre de l'Université de Montréal (OUM) in early January.

He is currently working on his percussion piece that is scheduled to be premiered in April 2014 by the percussionist David Therrien-Brongo.

2014 Composition Projects

Giancarlo Scalia has just completed his latest composition, a piece for violin and tape, and is currently working on a piece for orchestra inspired by a work by Ronsard. It should be completed by late 2013.

Other projects for 2014 include a work for solo percussion as part of his second composition residency at l'Université de Montréal as well as some new songs for voice and piano.

Summer 2013

After completing his DESS in piano performance at l'Université de Montréal in May, Giancarlo Scalia will be giving a recital with the baritone Julien Horbatuk at the beginning of July (works by Fauré, Poulenc, Barber and Vaughan Williams as well as the North-American premiere of his composition Je ne sais qui être).

He will then be in Europe; first in Vienna, Austria for private studies on lieder and then in Senigallia, Italy to participate in the Vox Musicae program, focusing on the Mozart-Da Ponte operas.

Finally, he will be back in Montreal in August to take part in the launch of Petite-Italie's Piano en ville with a performance of compositions and works by the legendary film composer Ennio Morricone.

Composer Residency

Giancarlo Scalia recently got a residency with the Université de Montréal brass ensemble as part of that institution's Concours de résidence. He will compose a new work for brass ensemble that should be completed in January 2013 and premiered in April or May 2013.

Je ne sais qui être

Giancarlo Scalia recently completed his composition Je ne sais qui être for voice and piano, on a text by Mathieu Abel. It will be played in Tours, France in August during the 2012 edition of the Académie Francis Poulenc.

Upcoming CD Releases

Two of Giancarlo Scalia's recent compositions, Three Miniatures (2011) and Yeux d’une fille dans un cimetière (2012), will be released this coming fall on two different CDs.

The first will be featured on a CD featuring works premiered during recent CéCo seasons and the second on Ensemble Piramirabo's debut CD.

2012 composition activities

Giancarlo Scalia is currently composing a work for quintet (fl/clar/vln/cel/pno), a commission by l'Ensemble Paramirabo. The piece will be premiered by that ensemble in March 2012.

He recently finished the composition of a new work for solo piano entitled Akme that is scheduled to be premiered by the composer at his undergraduate recital in May 2012. He also completed his piece for solo violin that is entitled Dialogue(s).

New work for solo violin

Giancarlo Scalia is currently composing a new work for solo violin as part of a project with Ensemble Transmission. The piece will be played by the ensemble's violinist, Alain Giguere, in a concert-conference in April 2012.

Premiere of Un Fou

As part of the opening concert of the IPPI Foundation, one Giancarlo Scalia's vocal compositions will be premiered by the soprano Rébecca Arrouvel with the composer at the piano at the Maison des Jeunesses Musicales du Canada in Montreal. Giancarlo is currently composing a new work for soprano, french horn and piano that should be completed by May 2011 and premiered later this year. It is on a poem by the French symbolist poet Albert Samain (1858-1900).

Premiere of Sonata for cello and piano

Giancarlo Scalia's compostition Sonata for cello and piano (2010) will be premiered in February at the third CéCo 2010/2011 season concert by the cellist Julie Hereish and the composer at the piano. Giancarlo Scalia's compostition Cri (2010) was premiered at the opening 2010/2011 CéCo season concert by the flutist Yovanny Betancur Santa. A recording of the premiere will soon be uploaded.

A recording of Giancarlo Scalia's compostition Je me souviens en toi... (2010) for string quintet and piano is now available on the Compositions page. This composition is dedicated to the Canadian composer Jacques Hétu, who passed away in February 2010.

Giancarlo Scalia's composition Rhapsody for piano and orchestra, commissioned in 2008 by l'Orchestre d'Harmonie Leonardo da Vinci, will be premiered the 13th of June 2009 by the OHLDV under the direction of Claude Ledoux and with Giancarlo Scalia as piano soloist. Premiere of Aria for Strings

Premiere of Voler, pero no podar

The short film Voler, pero no podar, directed by Raimundo Morte and scored by Giancarlo Scalia, will have it's first Montreal screening on September 24th. The premiere will be held on the 9th and 10th of October in Barcelona as part of the 2008 Liber Foire Internacional del Libro.
